Registered trademark of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. Can there be any stronger symbol of Christian identity than the cross? Surely it is symbolic of the despair and grief of sin. Yet as an empty cross, it is symbolic of hope, joy, and promise that God himself suffered and overcame the wages of sin through Jesus Christ. The logo for The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod appropriately continues the symbolism of the cross. Three crosses are yet one cross, recalling the "Unity in Trinity and the Trinity in Unity" confessed in the Athanasian Creed.

Area Lutheran Churches to Celebrate Reformation & Oktoberfest in Southside’s Rushton Park

(Birmingham, AL) – (October 20, 2005) -  Several area Lutheran churches will host a community Oktoberfest/Reformation celebration at Rushton Park on Highland Avenue Sunday, October 30th from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.  Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children twelve & under, and covers food and all activities.  Proceeds from the event will benefit Hurricane Victims. Thrivent Financial will match all donations through the event.

The German band, The Mitternachers will perform as German cuisine is served.  There will be door prizes, games for children, sing-alongs and lots of entertainment. Guests may bring lawn chairs and blankets.  No alcoholic beverages will be allowed.

This Oktoberfest celebration has been planned to celebrate Reformation Sunday, a day on which many Protestant churches observe the Protestant Reformation of the 1500’s.  Martin Luther, a German priest and professor, was the pioneer of the Reformation.  Luther is probably best known for his posting of his 95 theses on the door of the Wittenburg castle church in protest of the Roman Catholic church’s interest in power and wealth during that time.  It is from Luther that the Lutheran church got its name.  Learn more about Martin Luther and the Reformation by visiting the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod website – www.lcms.org

Oktoberfest in Rushton Park is sponsored by the Lutheran Churches, Missouri Synod:  Emmanuel Lutheran, First Lutheran, Good Shepherd Lutheran, St. Paul Lutheran and Thrivent Chapter 30448, Thrivent Financial, Mail Sort, Flex Digital, and Birmingham Christian Family, Piggly Wiggly and Birmimgham Coca-Cola Bottling Company.
