Registered trademark of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. Can there be any stronger symbol of Christian identity than the cross? Surely it is symbolic of the despair and grief of sin. Yet as an empty cross, it is symbolic of hope, joy, and promise that God himself suffered and overcame the wages of sin through Jesus Christ. The logo for The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod appropriately continues the symbolism of the cross. Three crosses are yet one cross, recalling the "Unity in Trinity and the Trinity in Unity" confessed in the Athanasian Creed.

1877 - 1962

First Lutheran Church Birmingham, AlabamaBirmingham was only 17 years old when the small group of Lutherans who had moved to this new city had a congregation and a pastor.  The first Lutheran sermon was delivered on January 2, 1886, by Rev. C. Burkart.

The congregation was founded in October 1887 with C.E. Scheibe installed as pastor of the new Zion Lutheran Church.  Mr. J. William Schaefer donated a lot in Elyton where the first building was erected by the actual church members.  A school was soon started in a private residence across the street.

After a deadly tornado destroyed the original building in 1901, a new location on Avenue B and 19th Street was purchased.  On October 12, 1902, a new sanctuary was dedicated.  Records show that 23 students were enrolled in the church’s school.

After the congregation adopted a new constitution in 1922, Zion officially became a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States.  This synod became the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod.

In 1949 the name was changed to First Lutheran and construction of the present sanctuary began in 1950.  On a day of much rejoicing the new house of worship was dedicated on the Feast of Pentecost, May 13, 1951.

Throughout the history of this church, God’s Word has blessed the congregation and expanded our ministry by forming other churches in Jefferson County.

Our most recent effort is our mission congregation - Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Shelby County.
