“Blessed to be a Blessing”Pastor Travis Thomas Lackey, Jr.
Tom is a graduate of Samford University with a BS in Business Administration and minor in Economics, class of 1974. He was employed by Delta Airlines and retired after 24 years of service in 2001 following the 9-11 terrorist attacks. He entered the Lay Ministry Training Institute (LMTI) program of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod and then attended St. Louis Concordia Seminary. Tom was ordained on June 6th, 2009, and installed as the associate Pastor of First Lutheran. While enjoying a military furlough in Hawaii, he met his future bride, Carol Heather. She is a native of Calgary, Canada. They were married on August 14, 1971, at First Lutheran Church in Birmingham. In 1972, they became members of First Lutheran. Their children, Heather, Joel and Alan were baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran. Joel is married to Brandy Webb and they have a young son, Aiden. Pastor Tom’s first official baptism was for his grandson, Aiden. He says, “I thought about serving in the ministry since I was a teenager at Woodlawn Baptist Church.” Tom was raised in the Baptist Church and was baptized as a pre-teen. Throughout his career with Delta Airlines, he still thought about serving God. “I kept boxing with God”, he says. Although he served on First Lutheran’s Board of Deacons for many years, Pastor Tom still felt God’s calling. With encouragement from Rev. Kurtis Schultz and support from Carol, Tom made a commitment to enter the LMTI program in 2001. Pastor Tom describes a special joy he feels when telling about God’s grace and mercy. “I enjoy seeing the faces of the communicants after they have received the sacrament and realize their sins are forgiven.” When asked about his favorite reading, Pastor Tom recommends the book of John and the book of Isaiah. “Isaiah is sometimes called the fifth Gospel yet it was written 600-700 years before Christ,” he said. |
